The Cure for Fear of Failure

Pastor and Author Mark Batterson, on the podcast “Redeem The Day” with Mark Batterson and Jordan Raynor says, “The cure for the fear of failure is not success. I think it’s failure in small enough doses that you build up an immunity to it. And you realize that God is there to pick up and dust you off and give you a second chance.”

Having lived through many failures I can testify that this statement is true. Small failures (and sometimes big ones) create an immunity to the sting of failure. When you fail and you are not destroyed, you realize that you can experiment more and you will be okay. Failure is part of business ownership.

If you run a research and development business, you know that no advancements are made without countless failures. The “research” part of your business is all about finding out what doesn’t work.

So let’s step out in faith and embrace failure for what it is, a learning experience. Sometimes it’s costly, most of the time it’s a blow to your ego, but failure should not stop you from moving forward again.

As your business grows you are going to experience failures. You may hire the wrong people who need to be let go. That doesn’t mean you never hire people again. You must move forward. Learn from your mistakes and hire again. You may take on too many customers and your service level suffers. What do you do? You figure out how to grow and maintain your superior customer service. You don’t back down and shrink your business!

I really like the last part of what Mark said when he talked about God picking us up and giving us a second chance. That is so key to overcoming failure. We must recognize that God is the God of second, third and fourth chances. He is gracious and full of love for us.

My prayer for you today is that you would learn to accept your failure and that it would build up an immunity so that you can experience the success that is waiting for you on the other side of those failures.
